Reality Check

I know I haven't updated about my dreaded eye appointment.  And really the only reason I haven't is that my grandmother is going through some stuff that makes my eye visit look pretty stupid, and has put this visit into perspective.  My visit was fine.  I got to by pass the dilating part by paying a little extra for an eye scan.  I'm slightly far sighted, and only have to wear glasses when in front of computers for several hours or driving long distances.  Basically, my eyes are still really good, they just get tired since they can see both near and far and have to strain a bit.  So, I'm in the process of trying to find some glasses that don't make me look stupid, and that I can wear to work. But, this whole thing kind of seems silly to even type when I have a grandmother in the hospital, and on a liquid diet with surgery in her near future.

We found out some bad news about my grandmother.  She was having some gall bladder issues, nothing serious just needing gall stones removed.  With her age though they were having to take some precaution and make sure everything was good before putting her under.  It was nothing major.  She had to take some antibiotics to help with an infection in her pancreas, and also go through a blood transfusion because she was really anemic.  So, Tuesday she was admitted into the hospital to get the blood, and was going to be released the next day.  But, things changed when the noticed her abdomen was enlarged because of fluid.  Ended up doing a colonscopy and found a mass obstructing her colon.  The doctor is pretty sure it is cancer, has done a biopsy and other blood tests. The biopsy came back inconclusive meaning the doctor isn't for sure. But, blood was drawn and fluid was taken out of stomach and sent off to be tested. The cat scan showed no other tumors anywhere else, but we have been getting mixed messages. We are waiting to hear the final results from all these tests, and probably won't hear until Monday.   So, we are in Orange spending time with her and the rest of the family.  She is in good spirits, and doesn't know as much as we all do.  We don't want her worrying about it all weekend while we wait on results.  So, if you could please lift her up in your prayers.

Moving On Up

Yesterday was a big day at swimming.  Not only did Dane pass his 1st part of the the float test, he also got an award for completing the goldfish level and is being promoted to the dolphin class.  There are 10 things that he was required to do before moving up.

-glides
-breath control- bubbles & rolls over
-Keeps face in water while swimming
-kicks independently
-row-row arms
-back floats independently
-turns front to back
-turns back to front
-turns & climbs out of pool
-swims width of pool independently

He has had 9 of the 10 checked off for quite a while.  But swimming the width of the pool independently has been the thing that has taken some time to be able to do.  Basically, he has to swim under the water to the middle of the pool where Heidi is standing, turn over to his back and float for a little ways, then she has him flip back to his stomach and swim and then ends on his back till he gets to the side of the pool completely unassisted.  Last week at swimming he totally shocked me and was able to do this all by himself.  Usually she has to help him flip over to his stomach, but it finally clicked last week.  So proud of him.  I'm so happy with his lessons, and how much he has learned.  I'm not really sure what the dolphins do in their class.  I'm assuming it starts getting more technical with strokes and things like that.  We'll see next week!

FLOAT TEST PART 1

I told Kevin right before Dane did his float test that I was really nervous.
Kevin who is always cool calm and collective agreed that he too was nervous.

We just had SOOO many thoughts going on in our head.

5 minutes is a LONG time to float on your back.
Dane has been able to float for a long time now, but he has never floated more than a couple minutes max.
We didn't know if he would be strong enough to hold his little body on top of the water that long.
Shoes are VERY heavy when wet.
Could he float with those heavy shoes?
Would if his shirt weighs him down.
Is his legs strong enough to hold his body plus wet tennis shoes
what happens if he falls out of the float and can't get back on his back
Is his hip going to be strong enough to float that long
would if he struggles the entire time
how long will they let him struggle before rescuing him

Now I know how my mom felt every time I had any kind of performance.  Big Ball of Nerves!

But, let me tell you so you don't watch the entire video in suspense...
He passed!!
And we were/are SOOO proud of him.

Now, I will warn you.  This video is long.  Only 5 minutes, but it feels like an eternity watching him float.  And there is a good 30 seconds smack dab in the middle of the 5 minutes that he is struggling and no longer floating and he is kicking to keep his face above the water.  And, honestly it's hard to watch.  It's a moment you are sitting on the edge of your seat and wanting to jump in and save him because you are not sure if he will make it till the end of the 5 minutes.  The rule is he can have no help, and no one can talk to him or coach him through it.  If he loses control and starts to sink he has to get back in the floating position on his own.

And he does!! He ends it strong!!
So proud of him!!
Let me tell you... he was a very tired lil man when he got out of the pool.  He got treated to MC Donald's after his big achievement!

My favorite part... when everyone clapped at the end and they rang a loud bell for him!! Major chills!

This week brings....

The past couple days I have felt a little under the weather.  I have what I think is maybe a head cold and just feeling little blah and tired.  On top of that I pulled a muscle in my neck which is annoying, and I'm experiencing some headaches behind and above my eyes.  Not really feeling it this week, I guess you could say. Ha Excedrin extra strength has been my bestie for the past few days.
But, I've been having these eye headaches for a while now. Months.  So...
I'm  thinking my luck has finally gone out the window, and if I had to put money on it I'm thinking I'm about to join the poor eye sight club.  Yeah, I've been lucky and have never needed any sort of eye glasses in my 31 years. And, honestly I'm hoping that Dane gets my eyes and not Kevin's because he has been in the club since he was really little.   But, unfortunately I think those days are over for me... :(

Which brings me to what will happen tomorrow... I have a dreaded eye appointment with an eye Doctor.  And I'm terrified! Yes. terrified.  I have gotten myself SOOOO worked up about this visit, and have even thought about canceling it.  just kidding... well, sort of.  I haven't been to the eye doctor since college, and I just don't have great memories of that visit. The eye puffer thingy and the idea of them putting eye drops in my eyes causes my heart to beat fast and I start feeling all panicky. Yeah I know, so dramatic.  I can take a shot all day long (it's not that I like them, but I'm not afraid of them), but touching the eye totally freaks me out. I just hope the staff is prepared that they may have to hold this girl down when dilating my eyes. Just Saying.  ARRGGH, I'm so nervous!
So, stay tuned for a detailed re-cap of my Dr visit...

Something else going on this week is today Dane is having Part 1 of a 3 Part Float Test at swimming lessons.  Basically he will be dressed in regular clothes and has to float for 5 minutes with no one talking to him, and with no instruction from his swim teacher to get on his back. Normally during his lessons he is told that he is going in the water and needs to turn over to his back.  But for the test he will be tossed into the water and  not spoken to and then they will see if he knows to get to his back.  I'm really nervous for him... and I don't really even know why.  It's not like anything happens if he "fails"...it just means he needs more work or practice.  I guess the word "test" gets me all anxious. And there's life guards everywhere at Houston Swim club, so I know my lil man will not drown. Part 1 he will be wearing regular shorts and a t-shirt with tennis shoes.  We have been telling him the last couple days he has to float with his clothes and shoes on.  At first he would say "no I only wear my baby suit in wader", but now I think he understands it's a test to see if he can float with his fast shoes on as he calls them.
This test is optional, and not mandatory to move up to next level. But, why not do it? I wanna know that if he falls into a body of water on a normal day wearing normal clothes he will know exactly what to do. My parents have a pool, and you just never know when little kids will decide to do something they "know" they shouldn't do. Him knowing what to do eases my mind a little.  So, if he "passes" the 1st round then he moves up to the next round of float test and so on till round 3.  And we get to go into the water room and video the whole thing, so I will be posting that tonight or tomorrow.

Now if my nerves can just make it through these couple things then it's smooth sailing for the rest of the week!

Beaching it Up

This week has just totally gotten away from me.  Not much happened over the past week but the normal daily grind. The entire week is a blur.  It's not too often that the week goes by this fast for me, and I have nothing to show for it.  I kind of feel like I woke up one morning and had skipped a few days.  Weird feeling.  And you know what else is weird... Dane is days away from being 3 1/2 years old.  I mean really? How did the first part of the year just fly by so fast?  It's unbelievable.

Kevin only has a few more weeks of his vacation left.  So sad, I know.  It's hard to feel sorry for him. Haha   Usually, he does get to a point though that he is ready for the summer fun to end.  I'm not sure if he is quite there or not, but I'm sure he is close.  When he is home it is constant "pway wit me daddy", "come upstairs in my pway room","you watch tv wit me daddy".  Dane gets spoiled during the summer.

We didn't have any plans for the weekend, or anything we had to do besides me helping in the nursery at church this morning, so we went to the beach for the day yesterday.  To avoid the hottest part of the day we ended up leaving pretty early yesterday morning.  Got to the beach around 9:30, which was perfect. It wasn't too crowded yet, and we were able to stake out a good part of the beach.  Did you know to rent one of those umbrellas on the beach it is $30?? Yeah, I was shocked too.  $30 is a lot for an umbrella with a tiny amount of shade.  So, needless to say we didn't have shade.  But, we set up a big blanket and had a couple folding chairs and had packed a cooler of drinks, sandwiches and snacks. Dane was on the move the entire time we were there.  He went back and forth from building sand castles to being chased by the waves. He had so much fun, and we really enjoyed being there. Even though it was pretty hot, it was really relaxing with the breeze and the sound of the waves.  We ended up leaving close to 1:00, and had to bribe Dane with ice cream in order for him to be ok with leaving the beach.  He was having too much fun.  But, he fell asleep in the car before we got to the ice cream shop, so we just headed home.  Dane woke up as we were pulling into our neighborhood, and said "h-eee-y we get ice cream now", so we had to turn the car around and ended up at Marble Slab.   We spent the rest of the afternoon completely lazy and vegged out.  The beach will wear you out, folks!  But, it was good times, and memories were made!

Last Post...

About New York.
I promise.

Last Monday I left New York and came back to the inferno otherwise known as Houston.  My boys stayed behind to spend some extra time with Grandpa and Grandma, and came back just this past Friday.  Didn't want to mention that I was home alone on here, since last summer I had some craziness happen at my house when Kevin was in Vermont and I was home alone.  I don't know what my problem is, but I just can't sleep well when I am home alone.  I lived by myself for over a year and half before Kevin came into the picture, but for whatever reason I get all freaked out now.
Anyway, Kevin and Dane stayed behind for another week, and Grandma and Grandpa had some more fun things planned for them.  I showed a sneak peak from Dane fishing a few days ago. Barry had sent me that picture the day I left through my email.  While Jackie was taking me to the airport the boys went down to their pond and went fishing.  I left Kevin with my little point and shoot camera so he could take some pics for me throughout the week.
Dane was really excited to go fishing.  And within 5 minutes of being at the pond Dane caught his very first fish!! Jackie and I hadn't left their house yet to leave for the airport and Barry called to tell us that Dane caught a fish!! He was excited knowing he had caught a fish before he actually saw it, but then once the fish was out of the water he kind of freaked out and didn't want to hold the rod anymore.  I don't think he was expecting to see a REAL fish!! lol But, he eventually was talked into holding the fishing pole so Kevin could get a picture.  Then the shock of seeing the fish was over, and he continued on fishing!! He would cast the line himself, and he could reel in the fish all by himself.  He caught 2-3 more fish, along with Barry and Kevin some that they kept, and then threw some back into the water.
Kevin called just as I was about to board my plane to tell me all about the fishing experience.  As he was telling me all about it he added a little mishap that occurred... Dane lost his balance and fell face first into the pond water and mud, and was covered in mud from head to toe.  Kevin said it was pretty funny, but Dane was freaking out and not a happy camper that he fell in the water.

They stayed pretty busy after I left.  They took Dane to a little water park one day, they visited the library for story time, Dane helped grandpa in his barn and helped with watering their new trees and yard work.  Dane visited Mater that I showed earlier, and he went fishing again with Grandpa.
Jackie and Barry's neighbor has a 3 year old granddaughter that was also in town the same time, so one afternoon they had a play date.  I think Kevin said the little girl's name was Josie, and he said that Dane played really well with her and shared all his toys with her.  She's a cutie.
This pic cracks me up.  Looks like Dane is telling her something like "you see that's how the super heroes get their powers", and she is just looking at him like "what is this guy talking about" Ha

One thing Kevin was really looking forward to was going to the Hall of Fame Museum in Cooperstown.  It was about 3 hours from his parents house, but they made a trip there one day.  He said it was neat to see the artifacts and history of the game of baseball.  Pretty cool that he got to visit the museum.  It's in the middle of nowhere, and he probably wouldn't have had an opportunity to go there without his parents living where they do.

And there you have it... that pretty much sums up my 5 days in New York, and the 9 days my boys spent there.

Mater Comes to New York

There's a shop near Kevin's parent's house that fixed up an old pick up truck to look like Mater from the movie Cars.  Barry and Dane went to see him one day, and he gave me these pictures.  Isn't Mater a cutie???  Everyone loves Mater!
