Love/Hate Relationship

Dopey had some major making up to do since he really got the little man mad at him for eating his Halloween candy.  He felt really bad, and wanted Dane to like him so Tuesday morning he was sitting on the kitchen table with an I'm sorry sign and some Christmas candy for the little dude.  Nothing says I'm sorry like a candy cane filled with Reese's cups and a box full of starbursts.
What a great opportunity to make this into a valuable lesson this Christmas season. People make mistakes, we should apologize when we make mistakes, and that forgiving those who do us wrong is very important.
Dane was soooo excited to see that Dopey brought him some new candy.  And he was over the moon that he told him he was sorry.  I had to go to work before Dane was awake, so I missed out on seeing his happiness, but Kevin took some pictures and I ended up talking to him on the phone.  He told me all about it how Dopey was sitting at the table with a sign that said I'm sorry, and he brought him Christmas candy.  He did mention that Dopey still needs to say sorry for making a mess with the toilet paper in the tv room, but he was besides himself and was so happy.  He told us that he forgave Dopey for eating his candy.

It was a success.  And Dopey was back to being on Dane's good side until...

It was all good in the hood till Dopey thought it would be a good idea to tie Batman and Superman and himself to the ceiling fan and go for a ride.  Dopey really thought Dane would think it was hilarious that they were flying around.  But, not so much.  He wasn't hurting his superhero friends, just having fun and being a little crazy.
Dane did not think it was funny.  At first he was mad that his friends had been tied to the ceiling fan, and then it quickly turned to sadness.  He started crying saying that he would never be able to play with Batman and Superman again, because they were to high to get down.  No idea my kid could be so dramatic. Kevin untied Batman and Superman right when he got emotional. In his defense, we had a really rough night last night so I think he was realllllllllly sleepy and cranky when Kevin woke him up to go to school.  He had come in our room around 2 in the morning complaining his ear hurt, ended up laying with us in our bed and was restless the rest of the night.  Kevin nor I could go back to sleep with Dane in the bed because he was moving all over the place.  Made for some cranky parents in the morning as well.  :)
But, anyway Dane was cranky to begin with and emotional about his men riding the fan.  So...
I would say Dopey's idea of a good time was a fail.  Sigh.
At dinner he told me he wasn't mad at Dopey anymore. I told him that Dopey was just trying to have some fun, and he agreed.  I'm really thinking the lack of sleep played a big part in the emotional breakdown.  Ha
Oh Dopey... what will you do next??

Oh, Dopey... Day 1&2

Morning 1:
Dane must have been thinking about our new friend when he went to sleep.  The 1st thing he did when he woke up was go to the office where Kevin was doing some work, and wanted to go see if Dopey was still in the same spot we left him.  I think he wanted so badly to prove that the Elf was not real, so he could say "see, I told you he couldn't fly".  But, he found that Dopey was no longer sitting with our nativity peeps.  Say what???  It took a minute before he happened to turn and see the tv room had been wrapped in toilet paper.  He stood there in shock.  He didn't know what to think.  Then he saw Dopey hanging out in the tree.  There was laughter, confusion, giggles, and fussing that Dopey had made a mess and that he had tricked us.  He was still quite a bit skeptical, but a little less than when he had 1st arrived.  He wanted to believe so bad that Dopey was a toy, but couldn't explain how the toilet paper had been strung all over the place.  I loved watching his little expression of pure confusion.
At one point I told Dane that the elf was watching him.
His response was classic
"Well, if he is watching me then I just won't hang out in this room"

Morning 1... success

Yes, he is in the same clothes as yesterday... don't judge

Morning 2:
Since Dane wasn't fully committed to the idea yet Dopey decided to step up his A game.
Kevin left on cartoons for Dane that morning when he left for work in case he woke up before I did.  If cartoons are on he will leave you alone til about 7ish then he starts demanding food.  I woke up around 7:15 hearing what sounded like a small train wreck coming from the kitchen.  I walked in while rubbing my eyes to find one TICKED OFF little man.  I hurried and grabbed my camera, and hid behind it to keep from laughing.
He was standing looking at what used to be his Halloween candy.  Silly Dopey had pretty much finished off his candy leaving just a very small bit.  And Dane was ticked!!!!!
Pretty sure the conversation went something like this
"That ELF ate all my candy"
me- "Oh no, did he really??"
"I'm ANGRY at him"
me- "well, maybe he was hungry from all that flying he did"
"That WAS NOT nice"
Me- "Here let's clean up all these wrappers"
"I'm not cleaning up that mess, HE can do it"
And my all time favorite this morning in the most annoyed and ticked off voice
"HE JUST NEEDS TO GO BACK TO THE NORTH POLE"
TICKED OFF!
Not to mention that he YANKED Dopey's sucker out of his hand, and THREW it in the trash, and demanded he take off his spider ring.
I'm talking infuriated.  And it was hilarious.  Does that make me a bad mom???  For the record before I get hate mail... all the candy Dopey ate was candy that Dane had been picking over the last month and wouldn't have eaten anyway.  And... when I saw how upset he was I let him eat a snickers BEFORE breakfast.  Does that make it any better?? HAHA but it was FUN-NY!!!!!!

When Kevin got home from work Dane told him all about it.  And we even saw Dane sticking his tongue out at Dopey.  We told Dane "you know the elf is watching you and he will report back to Santa if you were good"
He quickly replied with "Well, I'm WATCHING him and I'm going to send a bad report to Santa about Dopey. He made a mess, and HE ATE MY CANDY"
TALK ABOUT CRACKING UP.

So, I think it's fair to say that Dane now believes in Dopey.

Morning 2...success that he believes...
but he is not a fan of Dopey.
At all.

And for another record... Dane had clothes on when he went to bed, a Spider man costume to be exact.
Just so you don't think I sent him to bed nearly naked and froze to death.  No telling what happened between me tucking him in, and the point that I woke up to find him in the kitchen.  Geez check out his crazy hair!! lol
this next picture is not in focus... but I had to put it on here. It's his 1st reaction when he saw me. Little booger was not a happy camper.  To put it lightly bed head and all.

checking out the damage

 Pouty Pablo here

Mean Mugging Ol' Dopey. Like some serious mean mugging

Him telling me what he thought about Dopey, and how he just needs to take his little elf self back to the North Pole.  Serious business when you mess with a kid's Halloween candy.

Not sure how this will all play out... But I think Dopey has some apologizing to do tomorrow...

Let the Christmas fun begin...

Saturday was a big day.  Dane got a very important package in the mail from the North Pole.  We all know who lives in the North Pole.
Unfortunately we thought it was a great idea to actually wake Dane up from a nap to tell him about this package.  First of all... Dane hardly ever naps anymore, and he did Saturday.  But, it was getting later in the evening and we thought he would be pumped that he had a package.  So, we had a little grouchy pants on the loose at first.
We got inside and Kevin opened up and read the letter from Santa, and Dane opened up the package and found our very own elf.  At first he just looked confused. Kevin read him the story about the elf
The book says that once you give the elf a special name he will have his magic and will watch you and then fly to the North Pole every night when we are sleeping to report to Santa if you have been good or bad, and then will come back and be in a different spot in the house the next day.
At first Dane wanted no part in giving him a name.  He was extremely skeptical, and was not buying this whole story about the elf.  He made comments like "This elf is not real", and "This is not a real elf, it is just a toy", and "his eyes do not move", and "he can not fly".  Wasn't buying it at all.  I knew Dane may be a little tougher to trick than most.. He is very literal, and doesn't fall for much.
Finally after a little bit of encouraging that in fact this elf is real, and he won't get his magic until he has a name and so on he pointed to a word in the book, and said he knew that word.  And he wanted to name the elf that word.  Um... the word was "ON".  He wanted to name the elf ON.  He was being a little toot, obviously.  We told him that a sight word was not a good name for our elf.  We left him alone for a little bit, and finally after some time playing with the elf he said "what about the name Dopey".
Perfect.
So, our newest member of the family is Dopey the Elf.
After the elf is named the rule is that you aren't suppose to touch him or he could lose his magic.  So, we put Dopey up on a shelf for the rest of the day to watch Dane so he can report to Santa once he is asleep.
Dane was still not convinced that he was real.  Not even in the slightest bit.  He was pretty set that Dopey is a toy, and will still be in the same spot the next morning... we will see what Dopey decided to do to try and convince his friend.
Stay tuned for Morning 1 and Morning 2 of having Dopey in our lives...

Notice the bed head, and red mark on his forehead.  He was sleeping hard! Can't believe it.
Dane loves getting mail, so to get a package is pretty exciting.

Still half asleep, but curious what Santa could have possibly have sent him
Santa even wrote him a letter

Not sure what to think of this little elf sitting in that box

His little mind is a working... this is a toy. this is a toy. this is a toy
The book is really cute and explains the whole elf and what to do with it

waiting patiently for Dane to give him a name.

Poor Elf... had no idea what was coming being sent to Dane.  I think this is why the no touching rule is in place after he has a name, because Santa doesn't want his elfs getting tortured

 Being a little toot.

 And the elf became Dopey...
His spot for the rest of the evening.  Dane was dead set that the next morning he would wake up, and Dopey would still be sitting there because he did not believe that he would really fly to the North Pole...

Will Dane believe in Dopey??
